File Utilities (16)

File Utilities gathers 16 tools around the everyday mechanics of moving, splitting, finding, fixing and cleaning up files and folders — the kind of small, recurring annoyances that do not deserve a full-blown file manager but absolutely deserve a dedicated one-window solution. None of these tools try to replace Windows Explorer; each one solves exactly the one problem Explorer handles badly or not at all.

Splitting and merging cover the classic large-file problem: File Splitter breaks any file into numbered parts sized to fit a transfer limit or removable media, and File Merger reverses the process, walking the numbered sequence back into the original file. Attribute Changer gives you direct control over a file's read-only, hidden, system and archive flags alongside its creation and modified timestamps — useful both for routine cleanup and for the rare occasion you need to correct a timestamp that got mangled by a bad copy operation.

Discovery tools answer the "where did my disk space go" and "what is safe to delete" questions. Large File Finder scans a folder tree for anything above a size threshold you choose, sorted largest first; Old File Finder flags anything that has not been touched in longer than a chosen number of days; Empty Folder Finder recursively hunts down completely empty subfolders left behind by uninstalled software or half-finished reorganizing. Recent Files View gives you a read-only browsable list of what you have opened lately, while Recent Files Cleaner lets you selectively clear entries from the same Windows Recent Items list.

File-locking problems get two complementary tools. Handle finds and lists every process currently holding a specific file open — the same diagnostic question Sysinternals' handle.exe answers — using the same Restart Manager API Windows itself uses internally to figure out what needs to close before an installer can proceed. Unlocker takes the next step and actually closes those locking processes for you, using the identical detection mechanism, so a file that has been stuck showing "This file is in use" can finally be renamed, moved or deleted.

A handful of tools cover more specific repair and management scenarios. Icaros repairs a corrupted Windows Explorer thumbnail cache so video and image previews reappear after they mysteriously stop rendering. SpecialFoldersView lists every Windows special folder path — AppData, Local, Roaming, Temp and dozens more — with one click to open each directly in Explorer, which is far faster than typing %appdata% from memory every time. Jump Lists View reads the AutomaticDestinations folder Windows uses to power taskbar jump lists, listing each per-app history file with its last-used timestamp. Opened Files View shows every DLL and module a chosen running process currently has loaded, which doubles as a lightweight dependency inspector. IObit Unlocker closes out the category as a slightly more streamlined variant of the lock-breaking workflow — detect, close, and delete a stuck file in a single click rather than two separate steps.
