What Is It and When Do You Need It?
Fair teams are quick to make when chance does the choosing. Teachers, coaches, event hosts and friends all need to split a group into teams without arguments over who picked whom.
Paste the names, choose the number of teams or the team size, and press the button.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste the names, one per line.
- Choose to split by number of teams or people per team.
- Enter the number.
- Press Make teams and reshuffle if you like.
How the Calculation Works
The names are shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm. For a set number of teams, the shuffled names are dealt round-robin so sizes differ by at most one. For a set team size, the shuffled list is cut into groups of that size, and the last group takes whoever is left.
Worked Example
Eight names split into 2 teams give two teams of four. Ten names split into teams of 3 give three teams of three and one team of one.
Common Uses
- Classroom and sports teams.
- Group projects.
- Party and team-building games.

Tips and Common Mistakes
- Reshuffle to get different groups.
- Use an even number of names for equal teams.
- Add a name twice to split two people with the same name.
