What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Shuffling puts a list in an order that nobody chose. It is used for speaking order, quiz question order, playlists, test versions and fair queues.

Paste the list, press shuffle and copy the new order.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Paste your list, one item per line.
  2. Choose whether to number the lines.
  3. Press Shuffle.
  4. Copy the new order.

How the Calculation Works

The tool uses the Fisher-Yates shuffle: from the last item to the second, it swaps each item with a randomly chosen item at or before it. With unbiased random numbers this makes all orders equally likely.

Worked Example

The list one, two, three, four may come back as three, one, four, two. Pressing again gives a different order.

Common Uses

  • Speaking and presentation order.
  • Quiz questions and test versions.
  • Playlists and reading lists.
  • Fair queues.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Press again until you are happy, if it suits your purpose.
  • Keep a copy of the original list.
  • Use the name picker to draw winners instead.
  • If you need the same shuffle every time, for example to share a speaking order with a group, copy the result straight away, because pressing the button again will produce a completely new order.
  • Blank lines are ignored, and each non-empty line is treated as one item, so very long lines count as a single entry.

Next, you may need the random name picker, random team generator, random number generator, coin flip.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
