How These Unit Converters Work
Every converter on this site runs in your browser with JavaScript. The numbers you type are processed on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged, and no outside service is involved.
Each tool stores its units as multiples of one reference unit, such as the metre or the kilogram. A conversion multiplies into the reference unit and divides out into the target unit, so any pair of units works, and a table shows the same value in every unit.
Which Converter Should I Use?
- Travel and shopping: try the length converter, the weight converter and the temperature converter.
- Cooking and home: use the volume converter, the power converter and the energy converter.
- Cars and engines: see the fuel economy converter, the torque converter and the pressure converter.
- Computers: use the data storage converter and the frequency converter.
More free tools are in our math calculators, text tools and website tools. The units themselves are defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
