What Is It and When Do You Need It?
A recipe for four rarely suits six. Doing the sums for each ingredient in your head is slow and easy to get wrong, especially with fractions.
Paste the ingredient list, enter the servings and copy the scaled list.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste one ingredient per line.
- Enter the original and the wanted servings.
- Press Scale.
- Copy the new list.
How the Calculation Works
The factor is wanted ÷ original. At the start of each line, the tool reads a whole number, a fraction, a mixed number or a decimal, multiplies it by the factor and writes it back as a mixed fraction when it is close to a multiple of one eighth, otherwise as a decimal. The rest of the line is kept as written.
Worked Example
Scaling 4 servings to 6 gives a factor of 1.5. 2 cups flour becomes 3 cups flour, 1/2 tsp salt becomes 3/4 tsp salt and 1 1/2 cups milk becomes 2 1/4 cups milk.
