What Is It and When Do You Need It?
Sleep comes in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, and waking at the end of one can feel easier. A sleep calculator turns that idea into clock times, so you can choose a bedtime that lines up with your alarm.
Tell it when you need to wake, or when you plan to sleep, and it lists four or five good times.
How to Use This Tool
- Choose whether you know the wake time or the bedtime.
- Pick the time.
- Enter how many minutes you usually need to fall asleep.
- Press Calculate and pick a time from the list.
How the Calculation Works
Each cycle is 90 minutes. When you give a wake time, the tool counts backwards 3 to 6 cycles and subtracts the time to fall asleep. When you give a bedtime, it adds the time to fall asleep and then 3 to 6 cycles. It marks 5 and 6 cycles, 7.5 and 9 hours, as the ideal range for adults.
Worked Example
To wake at 07:00 with 15 minutes to fall asleep, go to bed at 21:45 (6 cycles, 9 hours), 23:15 (5 cycles, 7.5 hours), 00:45 (4 cycles, 6 hours) or 02:15 (3 cycles, 4.5 hours).
Common Uses
- Setting a bedtime for an early start.
- Planning naps (a 90-minute nap fits one cycle).
- Shift work and travel.
- Building a regular sleep routine.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Keep a regular schedule, which matters more than the exact minute.
- Four or fewer cycles should be the exception.
- Screens and caffeine late in the day make it harder to fall asleep.
