What Is It and When Do You Need It?
Military time is the 24-hour clock, written with four digits. The day runs from 0000 to 2359, so there is no AM or PM. Armed forces, hospitals, airlines, railways and emergency services use it, and many countries use it every day.
Type a time in either style and the tool shows it in the other, plus how to say it.
How to Use This Tool
- Type a time such as 1730, 17:30 or 5:30 pm.
- Press Convert.
- Read the 24-hour and 12-hour forms.
- Use the spoken form if you need to say it.
How the Calculation Works
For the 12-hour form: hours from 1 to 11 are AM before noon; 12 is noon (12 PM); hours 13 to 23 become 1 to 11 PM; 0 becomes 12 AM. For the 24-hour form: PM hours below 12 get 12 added, and 12 AM becomes 0.
Worked Example
0000 is 12:00 AM (midnight). 1200 is 12:00 PM (noon). 1530 is 3:30 PM. 2145 is 9:45 PM. 5:05 am is 0505.
