BPM Calculator: Tempo, Note Lengths and Delay Times

This free tool finds the tempo in beats per minute from a count of beats over a time, and turns any BPM into the length of each note value in milliseconds and in hertz, which is useful for delay and echo settings.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Tempo drives music, dance, exercise and sound design. Producers need exact delay times, and runners and dancers want an exact rhythm.

Enter a BPM, or enter the beats you counted and the seconds.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

BPM equals beats divided by seconds, times 60. The quarter note length in milliseconds is 60,000 divided by BPM. Other values follow by multiplying: a whole note is 4 times, a half is 2 times, an eighth is half, a sixteenth is a quarter, dotted notes are 1.5 times and triplets are two thirds. The bar length is the beat length times the beats per bar.

Worked Example

30 beats in 15 seconds is 120 BPM. At 120 BPM a quarter note is 500 ms, an eighth is 250 ms, a dotted quarter is 750 ms and a quarter triplet is 333.3 ms.

Common Uses

  • Music production and delay settings.
  • DJ mixing.
  • Workout and dance tempo.
  • Metronome settings.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Count for a longer time for a better result.
  • Divide ms by 1000 for seconds.
  • Songs may speed up or slow down.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the time duration calculator, seconds to hours, minutes and seconds converter, day of the week calculator, date difference calculator.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.

Frequently Asked Questions

60,000 divided by the BPM. At 120 BPM a beat lasts 500 ms.
A dotted note is one and a half times as long. A triplet fits three notes where two normally go, so each is two thirds as long.
As the rate for tempo-synced effects such as tremolo or LFOs. One beat per 500 ms is 2 Hz.
