What Is It and When Do You Need It?

A text is made of more than words. Writers, teachers and developers often need to know how many digits, punctuation marks or emoji a text holds.

Paste your text and read the full breakdown.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

The tool uses Unicode character classes. Letters use \p{L}, digits \p{N}, uppercase \p{Lu}, punctuation \p{P} and emoji \p{Extended_Pictographic}. URLs, hashtags, mentions and numbers are found with simple patterns. Ratios are worked out from these counts.

Worked Example

The text Hello World! 2 cats #fun has 15 letters, 1 digit, 1 punctuation mark, 1 hashtag, 5 vowels and 3 uppercase letters.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Spaces and line breaks are counted separately from letters.
  • Symbols such as + and = are counted as other characters.
  • For word and sentence counts use the character counter.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the syllable counter, readability score calculator, character counter, text repeater.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
