What Is It and When Do You Need It?

An acronym compresses a phrase into its first letters. Organisations, projects, teams and technical terms all use them. The generator works out the initials for you, and for many phrases at once.

Paste one phrase per line and choose how to treat small words.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Type one phrase per line.
  2. Choose whether to skip small words and whether to use dots.
  3. Choose the letter case.
  4. Press Generate.

How the Calculation Works

Each phrase is split into words on spaces and hyphens. The first letter of each word is taken, unless the word is on the small-word list and skipping is on. The letters are joined, with optional dots, and converted to the case you choose.

Worked Example

Portable Document Format gives PDF. Republic of India gives RI if small words are skipped and ROI if they are kept.
