What Is It and When Do You Need It?
A syllable is a single beat of sound in a word. Poets count them for haiku and meter, songwriters count them for lyrics, and readability formulas use them to judge text difficulty.
Paste a line, a poem or a paragraph and read the counts.
How to Use This Tool
- Paste your text, one line per row for poems.
- Press Count.
- Read the total and the count for each line.
- Check the word table for any odd results.
How the Calculation Works
Each word is lower-cased and stripped of punctuation. The tool counts groups of vowels (a, e, i, o, u, and y when it acts as a vowel). It then subtracts one for a silent e at the end, adjusts for -le and -ed endings and never returns less than one for a word.
Worked Example
beautiful has 3 syllables, syllable has 3 and banana has 3. The line An old silent pond has 5, the first line of a famous haiku.
