This free tool removes Markdown formatting and leaves plain text. It strips heading marks, bold and italic stars, link syntax, image tags, code fences, quote marks, rules and optionally list bullets.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Markdown is easy to write but noisy to read. When you need plain text for an email, a form or a word count, the symbols get in the way.

Paste the Markdown and choose how to treat links and lists.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

The tool works line by line and with patterns. Code fences are removed. Images become their alt text. Links become their text, or text plus the address. Heading hashes, block quote marks and list bullets are removed at the start of lines. Bold, italic, strikethrough and inline code marks are removed around words.

Worked Example

# Title with **bold** and [a link](https://x.com) becomes the two lines Title and bold and a link.

Common Uses

  • Plain text for emails and forms.
  • Counting words in notes.
  • Cleaning README files.
  • Preparing text for voice tools.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Check numbers lists, which are kept unless you remove bullets.
  • Underscores inside words are kept.
  • HTML tags inside Markdown are not removed. Use the HTML tag stripper for that.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the HTML tag stripper, HTML entity encoder and decoder, character counter, text repeater.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
