What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Sometimes you only want the words from a web page. Copying from page source or from an email template gives you tags that get in the way.

Paste the HTML and copy the clean text.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

Comments, script blocks and style blocks are cut out first. Block tags (p, div, br, li, tr, h1 to h6) are replaced by a line break if you keep them. All other tags are removed. Then common entities are decoded and extra blank lines are trimmed.

Worked Example

<p>Hello <b>world</b></p><p>Next</p> becomes two lines: Hello world and Next.

Common Uses

  • Cleaning copied web content.
  • Extracting text from email templates.
  • Counting words in HTML.
  • Preparing text for translation.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Check the result for text that was hidden by CSS, which is still kept.
  • Image alt text is not kept.
  • Link addresses are removed along with the tag.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the HTML entity encoder and decoder, Markdown stripper, character counter, text repeater.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
