How the Calculation Works

For the grade mode the tool divides your points by the points possible and looks up the letter in the scale. Grade points use the 4.0 scale. For the final exam mode it treats the course grade as a weighted mix of your current grade and the exam, and solves for the exam score that reaches your target.

Worked Example

45 out of 50 is 90%, an A- worth 3.7 grade points. With a current grade of 85, a final worth 30% and a target of 90, you need 101.7% on the final, which cannot be reached without extra credit.

Points earned divided by points possible, times 100.
A common US scale: A 93 and up, A- 90, B+ 87, B 83, B- 80, C+ 77, C 73, C- 70, D+ 67, D 63, D- 60, F below 60. Your school may differ.
Needed score = (target - current x (1 - weight)) / weight, where weight is the final exam share as a fraction.
Then the target cannot be reached without extra credit. The tool tells you so.
