Online Calculator: Type a Whole Expression and Get the Answer

This free calculator reads a full expression, with brackets and the correct order of operations, and shows the result. It supports powers, roots, percentages as remainders, factorials, logs and trig functions.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

A calculator that reads a whole expression saves time because you can check the sum as you wrote it, and fix a mistake without starting again.

Type the expression and choose the angle unit if you use trig.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

The tool splits the expression into numbers, names and symbols. A recursive parser then builds the answer following the usual rules: brackets, powers, multiplication level, addition level. Unary minus applies after powers, so -2^2 is -4. Constants pi and e are known. Results use full double precision, shown with 12 significant digits unless you pick the decimal places.

Worked Example

(12 + 8) * 3 / 4 gives 15. sqrt(144) + 5! gives 132. sin(30) in degrees gives 0.5.

Common Uses

  • Quick sums.
  • Checking homework.
  • Mixed operations in one line.
  • Engineering and trig checks.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Write 2*(3+4), not 2(3+4).
  • Use a point for decimals.
  • Very large results may show in scientific notation.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the trigonometry calculator, scientific notation converter, percentage calculator, average calculator.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plus, minus, times, divide, power (^ or **), remainder (%), brackets and factorial (!). Functions: sqrt, cbrt, abs, sin, cos, tan, asin, acos, atan, ln, log (base 10), log2, exp, floor, ceil and round.
Brackets first, then powers, then multiplication, division and remainder, then addition and subtraction. Powers work from the right, so 2^3^2 is 2^9.
It gives the remainder after division, so 10 % 3 is 1. For percentages use the percentage calculator.
Yes. The tool reads your expression with its own small parser and never runs it as code.
