What Is It and When Do You Need It?
GPA is the average of your grades, weighted by how many credits each course carries. A 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit one. Students use GPA for scholarships, university applications and academic standing.
This calculator reads letter grades or grade-point numbers, one course per line, and returns the weighted GPA.
How to Use This Tool
- Type one course per line: the grade, a space, then the credit hours, for example A- 3.
- Choose how A+ is counted at your school.
- Press Calculate.
- Read the GPA, the total credits and the quality points per course.
How the Calculation Works
Each grade is changed into grade points using the standard table. Quality points for a course equal grade points × credits. GPA = total quality points ÷ total credits.
Table used: A+ 4.0 (or 4.3), A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D− 0.7, F 0.
Worked Example
Courses: A 3, B+ 4, A- 3, C 2. Quality points are 12, 13.2, 11.1 and 4, which add up to 40.3. Credits total 12. GPA = 40.3 ÷ 12 = 3.36.
Common Uses
- Planning the marks you need this term.
- Scholarship and admission forms.
- Combining several semesters into a cumulative GPA.
- Checking a transcript.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Include every course that counts at your school, and leave out pass/fail courses.
- For a cumulative GPA, add all courses from every semester in one list.
- Some schools drop the lowest grade or repeat courses, so the official figure may differ.
