Ping IPv6 Address: Free Online IPv6 Ping Test

Use this free tool to ping an IPv6 address or a website's AAAA record from our server. It sends four ICMPv6 echo requests and reports reply times, packet loss and latency.

What Does It Mean to Ping an IPv6 Address?

To ping an IPv6 address means to send an ICMPv6 echo request to it and measure the reply. It works like the classic ping, but it travels only over IPv6. A successful reply proves that the address exists, that the host is up and that a working IPv6 path leads to it.

Because IPv6 and IPv4 can follow different routes, a site may answer on one and fail on the other. An IPv6 ping isolates the IPv6 side so you can test it directly.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter an IPv6 address such as 2001:4860:4860::8888, or a domain that has an AAAA record.
  2. Press Ping.
  3. Read each reply with its time and hop limit.
  4. Check the statistics for packet loss and average latency.

IPv4 Ping and IPv6 Ping Compared

Domain record usedA recordAAAA record
BlockingOften blocked by firewallsICMPv6 is required for IPv6 to work, so it is usually allowed in part
Typical latencySimilarSimilar, but the route can differ

The protocol is defined in RFC 4443, the ICMPv6 specification.

An Important Note About This Tool

An IPv6 ping needs a server with working IPv6 connectivity. If our server cannot reach the IPv6 internet at the moment, the tool will say so clearly and send nothing, instead of showing a false failure. In that case you can still look up the address and test the domain with the IPv6 readiness checker.

Troubleshooting IPv6 Ping Problems

  • No AAAA record: the domain has no IPv6 address. Add one at your DNS provider.
  • Timeouts only on IPv6: the host may be missing an IPv6 address, or its firewall blocks ICMPv6.
  • Very high latency: the IPv6 route may be longer than the IPv4 one. Compare both with the IPv4 ping test.
  • Wrong address form: if you copied a long address, use the IPv6 shortening tool to check it is valid.

Remember that pings are sent from our server, so they show the path from there and not from your own connection.

Why Ping an IPv6 Address?

Use the ping IPv6 address test after you enable IPv6 on a server, to confirm that the new address answers. A ping IPv6 address check also shows whether a host that works on IPv4 is truly reachable on IPv6, which many sites forget to test. If the IPv4 ping works and the IPv6 one fails, look at the firewall, the AAAA record and the server’s network settings before anything else.

Run the ping IPv6 address test again after any change, and keep the reply times as a baseline for later troubleshooting.

Frequently Asked Questions

It uses ICMPv6 instead of ICMP and travels over IPv6 only. If a host answers IPv4 pings but not IPv6 pings, its IPv6 setup may be missing or blocked.
Yes. The tool looks up the AAAA record and pings the first IPv6 address it finds. A domain without an AAAA record cannot be pinged over IPv6.
The host may not support IPv6, a firewall may block ICMPv6, or there may be no IPv6 route between our server and the target.
It is usually close to the IPv4 time to the same host. Differences of a few milliseconds are normal because the paths can differ.
