Ping IPv4 Address: Free Online Ping Test

Use this free tool to ping an IPv4 address or website from our server. It sends four ICMP echo requests and shows each reply time, packet loss and the minimum, average and maximum latency.

What Does It Mean to Ping an IPv4 Address?

To ping an IPv4 address means to send a small test packet to it and wait for the reply. The packet is an ICMP echo request. If the host is online and allows it, it sends an echo reply back, and the time between the two is the round-trip latency.

Ping is the quickest way to check whether a server is reachable and how fast the connection is. Administrators, gamers and anyone with a slow connection use it every day.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter an IPv4 address such as 8.8.8.8 or a domain such as example.com.
  2. Press Ping. Our server sends four echo requests.
  3. Read each reply with its time and TTL value.
  4. Check the statistics table for packet loss and the minimum, average and maximum time.

The tests are sent from our data centre, so they show how reachable the target is from there. They do not measure your own device.

Reading the Ping Results

ValueMeaning
TimeRound-trip delay in milliseconds. Lower is faster.
TTLThe remaining hop limit on the reply. It hints at the operating system and distance.
Packet lossThe share of requests that got no reply. Any steady loss is a sign of trouble.
Min, average, maxThe spread of the times. A big gap between them points to an unstable path.

ICMP is defined in RFC 792, the ICMP specification.

What Counts as a Good Ping?

  • Under 30 ms: excellent, typical for the same city or region.
  • 30 to 100 ms: good for browsing, video calls and most games.
  • 100 to 250 ms: fine for the web, but noticeable in fast games.
  • Over 250 ms or loss: investigate the route with the route tracing tool.

Why a Ping May Fail

The host blocks ICMP

Many firewalls and cloud servers drop ping on purpose. The site can still work perfectly, so check it in a browser too.

The host is offline

If every request times out and the website does not load, the server or its network may be down.

The name does not resolve

If you entered a domain, the tool first looks up its IPv4 address. Check the spelling, or find the address with the domain address finder. For IPv6 targets use the IPv6 ping test.

Why Ping an IPv4 Address?

Teams ping IPv4 address targets before a launch to confirm that a new server is reachable, after a router change to see whether traffic flows and when a site feels slow. A quick ping IPv4 address test separates network delay from server delay in seconds. Run the ping IPv4 address check at different hours, because latency changes with load, and keep the numbers when you contact your hosting provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ping sends a small ICMP echo request to a host and waits for the echo reply. It shows whether the host is reachable and how long a round trip takes.
Under 50 ms is excellent for the same region, and under 150 ms is fine for most uses. Intercontinental paths often take 150 to 300 ms.
The host may be offline, but many servers and firewalls also block ICMP on purpose. A failed ping does not always mean the site is down.
No. The pings are sent from our server, so the times show the path from our data centre, not from your own connection.
