What Is It and When Do You Need It?
A tip is an extra payment for service, usually a percentage of the bill. Working it out and then dividing the total at the table is awkward after a meal. This calculator does both steps.
Enter the bill, a tip percentage and the number of people. You get the tip, the total and each person’s share.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter the bill amount.
- Enter the tip percentage.
- Enter how many people share the bill.
- Choose rounding and press Calculate.
How the Calculation Works
Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. Total = bill + tip. Share per person = total ÷ people. If you choose rounding, the total or each share is rounded up to the next whole number, and the effective tip percentage is shown so you can see what you really paid.
Worked Example
A bill of 84.50 with a 15% tip is a tip of 12.68 and a total of 97.18. Split four ways, each person pays 24.29, or 25 if rounded up.
Common Uses
- Restaurants, cafes and bars.
- Taxis and delivery.
- Splitting a bill with friends.
- Checking what a rounded tip really is.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Check whether service is already included.
- Rounding up raises the effective tip slightly.
- Local customs matter more than a fixed percentage.
