What Is It and When Do You Need It?

A discount lowers a price by a percentage or a fixed amount. Shop signs often say "20% off, then an extra 10% off" and it is hard to see the real price. This calculator gives the true sale price and total saving.

Choose the kind of discount, enter the price and the discount, and add a second discount if there is one.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Choose percentage, find percentage, or amount off.
  2. Enter the original price.
  3. Enter the discount, and a second discount if you have one.
  4. Press Calculate.

How the Calculation Works

Sale price = price × (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100). The saving is the original price minus the sale price, and the real total discount is saving ÷ price. To find the percentage off from two prices: (original − sale) ÷ original × 100.

Worked Example

A 2,400 coat with 20% off then 10% off costs 2,400 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 1,728. You save 672, which is 28% off in total.

Common Uses

  • Shopping and sales.
  • Comparing offers.
  • Setting sale prices as a seller.
  • Checking a discount claim.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Two discounts do not add up: 20% and 10% make 28%.
  • Compare the final price, not the percentage.
  • Check whether tax is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it. 20% off 2,400 saves 480, giving 1,920.
Two discounts one after the other, such as 20% then 10%. The second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total is 28%, not 30%.
Subtract the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price and multiply by 100.
