What Is It and When Do You Need It?
GST is a tax added to the price of most goods and services in India. Businesses and buyers need to add it to a base price or take it out of a total price. Mistakes are common when people subtract the percentage instead of dividing.
Enter the amount, say whether GST is already included, pick the rate and read the net price, the tax and the split.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter the amount.
- Choose whether it is before or after GST.
- Pick the GST rate or type a custom one.
- Press Calculate.
How the Calculation Works
To add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100 and total = price + GST. To remove GST: price = total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100) and GST = total − price. For sales within a state, CGST and SGST are each half of the GST. The same maths works for VAT and sales tax at other rates.
Worked Example
Removing 18% GST from 11,800 gives a price of 10,000 and GST of 1,800, split as 900 CGST and 900 SGST. Adding 5% GST to 2,000 gives 100 GST and a total of 2,100.
Common Uses
- Billing and invoices.
- Checking supplier prices.
- Shopping and budgeting.
- Accounting and filing checks.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- Never subtract the percentage from the total; divide by 1 plus the rate.
- Use IGST (the full amount) for sales between states.
- Confirm the current rate on the official GST site.
