What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Lists come in two shapes: a column and a line. Spreadsheets give you columns, while forms and code want commas. This tool moves between them.

Paste the list, pick the direction and options and copy the result.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

In lines-to-line mode the text is split on line breaks, each item is trimmed, blanks are dropped, duplicates are optionally removed, quotes are added and the items are joined with the separator. In line-to-lines mode the text is split on the separator and each item is put on its own line.

Worked Example

The lines red, green, blue one per line become "red","green","blue" with double quotes and commas.

Common Uses

  • SQL IN lists.
  • Tags and keywords.
  • Mailing lists.
  • Spreadsheet column to code.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Pick the tab separator to paste back into a spreadsheet.
  • Turn on duplicate removal for tag lists.
  • Check numbers: they are kept as text.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the line sorter, text repeater, character counter, fancy text generator.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
