What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Not every keyboard can type accents. Writers of French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and many other languages often need letters their keyboard does not have.

Type your text with shortcuts and the tool does the rest.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

In shortcut mode the tool looks for a backslash, a mark and a letter and replaces the three characters with the single accented character. Upper and lower case letters both work. If no single accented letter exists for the pair, the text is left alone. In the other modes the tool adds a Unicode combining mark after every letter and joins them into single characters where a precomposed letter exists.

Worked Example

caf\'e \~nandu \"uber fa\,cade \ss becomes café ñandu über façade ß.

Common Uses

  • Writing in other languages.
  • Typing names with accents.
  • Social media styling.
  • Testing software with accented input.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Check names and brand names after converting.
  • Combining marks on every letter can be hard to read.
  • Use the accent remover to undo the change.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the invisible character remover, Unicode normalizer, character counter, text repeater.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.

Frequently Asked Questions

A backslash, then a mark, then a letter: \'e gives é, \`e gives è, \^e gives ê, \"e gives ë, \~n gives ñ, \,c gives ç and \/o gives ø. The words \ss, \ae, \oe and \aa give ß, æ, œ and å.
Plain apostrophes, colons and commas are part of normal writing, so a backslash keeps ordinary text such as it's and note: safe from change.
Unicode characters that sit on top of the letter before them. Adding one to every letter gives a decorative look.
