Number to Ordinal Converter: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and Words

This free tool turns a number into its ordinal form (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and its ordinal word (first, second, third). It also reads ordinal words like "twenty-first" and "21st" back into plain numbers.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Dates, rankings and floors all use ordinals. Getting the suffix right is a small detail that readers notice.

Type a number to get the ordinal, or type an ordinal to get the number.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

For the suffix, the tool checks the last two digits: 11, 12 and 13 take th, otherwise the last digit decides. For words, it writes the number in words and changes the final word into its ordinal form (one to first, two to second, three to third, five to fifth, eight to eighth, nine to ninth, twelve to twelfth, and y to ieth for the tens). The reverse direction reads the words and adds up their values.

Worked Example

22 becomes 22nd and twenty-second. 113 becomes 113th and one hundred thirteenth. twenty-first becomes 21.

Common Uses

  • Dates and rankings.
  • Writing and editing.
  • Forms and invoices.
  • Language lessons.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Zero becomes zeroth.
  • Negative numbers are not supported.
  • Say "the 1st" and not "the 1th".
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Next, you may need the number abbreviator, Collatz sequence calculator, prime number checker, GCD and LCM calculator.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
