Number Abbreviator: Shorten and Expand K, M, B Numbers

This free tool shortens large numbers to K, M, B and T (for example 1,234,567 to 1.2M) and expands short forms back to full numbers. It also supports the Indian style with lakh and crore.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Short numbers are easier to read on charts, buttons and social posts. 1.2M says more at a glance than 1,234,567.

Type a number to shorten it, or a short form to expand it.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter or paste your input in the box or boxes above.
  2. Choose the options, if there are any.
  3. Press the button to run the tool.
  4. Read the result and use the copy button where one is shown.

How the Calculation Works

To shorten, the tool picks the largest unit that is not above the number, divides, rounds and adds the letter. If rounding reaches the next unit it moves up. To expand, it reads the number and the suffix and multiplies by the unit value.

Worked Example

1234567 becomes 1.2M. 1.5K becomes 1,500. 2.5 crore becomes 25,000,000.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Negative numbers keep their sign.
  • Use the Indian style for lakh and crore.
  • Check the first result against a case you already know, so you can trust the tool for the rest.
  • Nothing you type leaves your device. The work is done by your browser, so it also works with a slow connection once the page has loaded.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, stored or sent to any outside service.
