Data Storage Converter: Convert Bit, Byte and More

This free data storage converter converts 12 units, including bit, byte and kilobyte (1,000 bytes). Type a value, choose the units and read the answer, plus the value in every other unit.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Data size measures how much digital information is stored. Storage makers count in powers of 1,000 (KB, MB, GB), while operating systems often count in powers of 1,024 (KiB, MiB, GiB), which is why a new drive looks smaller than advertised.

This converter handles 12 units for byte and shows the result in all of them at once, so you rarely need a second lookup.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Type the value you want to convert.
  2. Choose the unit you have in the From list.
  3. Choose the unit you want in the To list.
  4. Press Convert and read the answer and the table of every unit.

How the Calculation Works

Every unit is stored as a multiple of one reference unit (the byte). To convert, the value is multiplied into the reference unit and then divided by the size of the target unit. All factors are exact or taken from standard definitions, and results show up to ten significant digits.

Common Uses

  • Checking how much space a file or drive really has.
  • Comparing cloud storage plans.
  • Understanding why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB.
  • Network and download planning.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Eight bits make one byte.
  • The units with "bi" (KiB, MiB, GiB) use 1,024; the plain ones (KB, MB, GB) use 1,000.
  • Use the table under the answer to see the same value in every unit.
