What Is It and When Do You Need It?
Frequency is how many times something repeats each second. Hertz is the SI unit, radio and processors use kilohertz up to gigahertz, and engines and music use rpm and bpm.
This converter handles 8 units for hertz and shows the result in all of them at once, so you rarely need a second lookup.
How to Use This Tool
- Type the value you want to convert.
- Choose the unit you have in the From list.
- Choose the unit you want in the To list.
- Press Convert and read the answer and the table of every unit.
How the Calculation Works
Every unit is stored as a multiple of one reference unit (the hertz). To convert, the value is multiplied into the reference unit and then divided by the size of the target unit. All factors are exact or taken from standard definitions, and results show up to ten significant digits.
Worked Example
| You enter | You get |
|---|---|
| 1 Hz | 0.001 kHz |
| 10 Hz | 1e-05 MHz |
| 100 kHz | 100000 Hz |
Reference values:
| From | To |
|---|---|
| 1 Hertz | 0.001 kHz |
| 1 Hertz | 1e-06 MHz |
| 1 Hertz | 1e-9 GHz |
| 1 Hertz | 1e-12 THz |
| 1 Hertz | 60 rpm |
| 1 Hertz | 60 bpm |
| 1 Hertz | 6.2831853 rad/s |
Common Uses
- Radio and Wi-Fi bands in MHz and GHz.
- Computer processor clock speeds.
- Engine and motor speeds in rpm.
- Music tempo in beats per minute.
Tips and Common Mistakes
- One hertz is one cycle per second.
- Sixty rpm equals one hertz.
- Use the table under the answer to see the same value in every unit.
