PDF++ vs Adobe Acrobat (2026): Do You Need the Subscription?

Acrobat plans, prices and cancellation terms checked against Adobe's pages, set beside PDF++, an offline Windows PDF toolkit. Where Acrobat is the better choice.

PDF++ vs Adobe Acrobat (2026): Do You Need the Subscription?

Short answer: Adobe Acrobat is the standard, with the most complete feature set and the most tiers, but it is a subscription and its cheaper plan leaves out redaction, file compare and the 70+ tool set. PDF++ is a Windows program with 50+ tools that runs offline. I built PDF++, so read this as an interested but fact-checked comparison.

If you only need to edit a PDF now and then, a yearly Adobe subscription can feel like too much. If you work with PDFs daily, Acrobat’s depth is hard to beat. This guide sets out the real plans, features and cancellation terms, and says where Acrobat is the better choice.

Disclosure: PDF++ is my product. PDF++ facts come from its product page. Adobe facts come from Adobe’s official Acrobat pricing pages, which I read on 23 October 2026 (the US page in dollars and the India page in rupees). Adobe’s prices vary by region.

What Adobe charges

All of Adobe’s paid Acrobat plans are annual commitments unless you choose month to month. On Adobe’s US page:

Plan Annual, billed monthly Annual, prepaid Month to month
Acrobat Standard $14.99 a month $179.88 a year $24.99 a month
Acrobat Pro $19.99 a month $239.88 a year $29.99 a month
Acrobat Studio $24.99 a month $299.88 a year $34.99 a month

The terms matter as much as the price. If you cancel an annual plan billed monthly after 14 days, Adobe says a fee applies of up to half of the remaining commitment. On the prepaid annual plan it says there is no refund after 14 days. Month to month says you can cancel anytime with no fee. Over three years, Acrobat Pro on the annual prepaid plan comes to $719.64 at the US price. Adobe’s India page shows different amounts in rupees for the same plans.

What you get at each Acrobat level

  • Standard: view, print, share, convert to and from Office files, edit text and images, organize pages, combine files, fill and sign forms, password-protect.
  • Pro: everything in Standard plus comparing PDF versions, redacting sensitive information, turning scans into editable PDFs and access to 70+ PDF tools.
  • Studio: Pro plus AI tools such as asking AI to edit, convert or compress PDFs and summaries.

The free Acrobat Reader opens and views PDFs. If you only read and sign PDFs, you may not need anything more.

What PDF++ offers

PDF++’s page lists a PDF editor (text, images, links, pages), conversion to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML and images with batch folders, merge and split (by pages, ranges, size or bookmarks), compression, OCR for scanned documents, password protection with 128-bit or 256-bit AES, permissions, digital signatures, annotation and watermarking. It says all standard tools work offline, files are not uploaded and there are no file-size limits, and that you can try any tool free before purchasing.

Requirements per its page: Windows 10 (64-bit) or Windows 11, 4 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended for AI tools and batch work) and 250 MB of storage.

Where Acrobat is the better choice

  • You need redaction, file comparison or the wider 70+ tool set that Adobe puts in Pro.
  • You work on Mac, on the web and on mobile as well as Windows.
  • Your clients or company expect Adobe tools and Adobe’s long-established ecosystem.
  • You want a monthly plan you can cancel at any time.

Where PDF++ is the better choice

  • You work on Windows and want your PDF tools to run offline, with no uploads.
  • You prefer a licence you can try free to a subscription.
  • You mostly edit, convert, merge, split, compress, OCR and protect, and do not need redaction or file compare.

How to decide in 60 seconds

  1. Just reading and signing? The free Acrobat Reader may be enough.
  2. Need redaction or file compare? Choose Acrobat Pro.
  3. Windows only, mostly editing and converting, want offline? Try PDF++ free and compare its licence price with three years of Acrobat.
  4. Handle sensitive files? Prefer tools that run locally and check what each one uploads.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Adobe Acrobat cost?

On Adobe's US page, Acrobat Standard is $14.99 a month, Pro $19.99 and Studio $24.99 when billed monthly on an annual commitment. Annual prepaid prices are $179.88, $239.88 and $299.88 a year, and month-to-month plans are $24.99, $29.99 and $34.99. Adobe's India page shows different prices in rupees, so check your own region.

Is there a way to cancel Acrobat early?

Adobe's pricing page says a fee applies of up to half your remaining annual commitment if you cancel an annual plan billed monthly after 14 days, and that there is no refund on prepaid annual plans after 14 days. The month-to-month plan says you can cancel anytime with no fee.

Which Acrobat plan do I need to compress, OCR or redact?

Adobe lists redaction, comparing files and access to 70+ PDF tools as Pro and Studio features, and describes Pro as able to turn scans into editable PDFs. Standard covers viewing, editing, converting, organizing, signing and password protection. Adobe's pricing page does not list compression as a Standard or Pro feature.

Does PDF++ work offline?

Yes. Its product page says all standard tools work offline and files are not uploaded, although some AI features may need an internet connection.

Is PDF++ cheaper than Acrobat?

I cannot give a price comparison here because PDF++'s price is shown on its product page, not in this article. Over three years, Acrobat Pro at the US annual prepaid price comes to $719.64, which you can set against the PDF++ licence price.

Can I view PDFs for free?

Yes. Adobe says Acrobat Reader is free for opening and viewing PDFs. Editing, converting and similar tasks need a paid Acrobat plan or another PDF tool.

What I checked, and what this comparison cannot tell you

I read Adobe’s Acrobat pricing page and its Acrobat overview on 23 October 2026. Adobe does not state the free-trial length on the pages I read. PDF++ facts come from its product page. I did not test output quality, so I make no claims about OCR accuracy or compression results. Prices change, so confirm them before you buy.
