What Is a Text to ASCII Converter?

A text to ASCII converter changes each character of a text into its numeric code. ASCII, the American Standard Code for Information Interchange, gives a number from 0 to 127 to the letters, digits, punctuation marks and control characters of English. The capital letter A is 65, the small letter a is 97 and the digit 0 is 48.

This text to ASCII converter lists those numbers for any text, and decodes a list of numbers back into text. It also works with characters outside ASCII, using their Unicode number, so it doubles as a text to decimal tool.

How to Use This Text to ASCII Converter

  1. Type or paste your text, or a list of codes, into the box.
  2. Choose the direction: encode (text to codes) or decode (codes to text).
  3. Choose what separates the numbers: a space, a comma, a new line or nothing.
  4. Press Convert and copy the result.

Handy ASCII Values

CharactersCodes
Digits 0 to 948 to 57
Capital letters A to Z65 to 90
Small letters a to z97 to 122
Space32
New line (line feed)10
Tab9

The full table and its history are described in ASCII on Wikipedia. Notice that small letters are exactly 32 higher than capitals, which is why changing case is a simple operation inside computers.

Characters Beyond ASCII

ASCII has only 128 codes, so letters such as é, symbols such as the euro sign and every emoji need more. They use their Unicode number, which is above 127. The tool shows those numbers and tells you how many characters in your text fall outside basic ASCII. When decoding, numbers up to 1,114,111 are accepted, which is the highest Unicode value.

Why Convert Text to ASCII Codes?

  • Programming. Find the code of a character for comparisons and arithmetic.
  • Learning. See how computers represent letters as numbers.
  • Puzzles. Number codes are a classic way to hide a short message.
  • Debugging. Spot hidden characters, such as a tab (9) or a non-breaking space (160).

To see the codes in other bases, use the text to binary converter, the text to hex converter or the text to octal converter. For multi-byte detail, try the UTF-8 encoder and decoder. All conversions run in your browser.

Understand Character Codes

Every key you press produces a number inside the computer. Looking at those numbers explains many puzzles: why capitals sort before small letters, why a digit is not the same as its number and why a space is a character like any other. Try a short word and compare the codes.
