Percentile Calculator: Rank and Value from Your Data

This free percentile calculator works two ways. Give a value and find its percentile rank in your data, or give a percentile such as 90 and find the value at that point. It also lists the quartiles.

What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Percentiles show where a value stands in a group. Test scores, growth charts, salaries and response times are all reported in percentiles.

Paste your data and choose whether to find a value or a rank.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Paste your numbers.
  2. Choose value-at-percentile or percentile-rank.
  3. Enter the percentile or the value.
  4. Press Calculate.

How the Calculation Works

For the value at percentile p, the data is sorted and the position is p ÷ 100 × (n − 1). The value is interpolated between the two nearest ranks. The percentile rank of x is (count below x + 0.5 × count equal to x) ÷ n × 100. Quartiles are the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles.

Worked Example

For the numbers 1 to 10, the 90th percentile is 9.1, and the percentile rank of 7 is 65.

Common Uses

  • Test scores and grades.
  • Performance and speed reports.
  • Salary comparisons.
  • Data analysis.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • More data gives more stable percentiles.
  • The median is the 50th percentile.
  • Quartiles split the data into four groups.
  • When you compare results from different software, check which percentile method each uses, because small data sets can give slightly different answers with different methods.
  • A percentile rank describes position in your own list, not in the whole population, so a small or unusual list can mislead.

Next, you may need the average calculator, standard deviation calculator, z-score calculator, confidence interval calculator.
