What Is It and When Do You Need It?
A random color is a quick way to break a creative block. Designers use random palettes for inspiration, developers use random colors for test data and avatars, and teachers use them for games.
Choose how many colors and a style, and press the button as often as you like.
How to Use This Tool
- Choose how many colors you want.
- Pick a style such as pastel or vivid.
- Press Generate.
- Copy the colors you like, or press again for a new set.
How the Calculation Works
Each color picks a random hue from 0 to 360 and a random saturation and lightness inside a range that depends on the style. The result is converted from HSL to HEX and RGB. Picking in HSL instead of RGB gives more pleasing colors than random RGB values, which often look muddy.
Worked Example
Pastel mode might return colors such as #F4B6C9 and #B7E0D1, both soft and light. Vivid mode might return #E8173A or #19C2E0.
Common Uses
- Design inspiration.

Tips and Common Mistakes
- Use the palette generator to refine a color you like.
- Check contrast with the contrast checker.
- Press generate several times to compare sets, because each press gives a completely new set of colors.
- If you like one color, copy its HEX code before you press again, since there is no history.
