What Is It and When Do You Need It?

Ideal weight formulas estimate a typical weight for a given height and sex. They were created in the 1950s to 1980s for medical dosing, and are still popular. Because they disagree by a few kilograms, comparing them is better than trusting one.

Enter your height and sex to see all four formulas and the BMI-based range.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Choose your sex.
  2. Enter your height in centimetres.
  3. Press Calculate.
  4. Compare the four formulas and the BMI range.

How the Calculation Works

Each formula starts with a base weight at 5 feet (60 inches) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above it. The healthy range uses the weights that give a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at your height.

Worked Example

A man who is 175 cm tall (68.9 inches) gets about 70.5 kg (Devine), 68.9 kg (Robinson), 68.7 kg (Miller) and 72.0 kg (Hamwi). The BMI range for 175 cm is 56.7 to 76.3 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

None is perfect. They were made to guide drug doses, not to define a perfect weight. The healthy BMI range is often a more useful guide.
Devine: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for men, 45.5 kg for women. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 and 49 + 1.7. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 and 53.1 + 1.36. Hamwi: 48 + 2.7 and 45.5 + 2.2.
The formulas start at 5 feet (152.4 cm). Below that, they subtract per inch, which can be unreliable, so the tool shows only the BMI range for very short heights.
