What are Open Graph Tags?

Open Graph (OG) tags are HTML meta tags that control how a page appears when shared on social media. Developed by Facebook in 2010, they are now used by Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, WhatsApp, and many other platforms. Twitter uses its own twitter:card tags but falls back to OG tags. The most important tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url.

Frequently Asked Questions

Facebook and most platforms recommend 1200×630 pixels for og:image. This is a 1.91:1 ratio. Twitter's summary_large_image card uses a 2:1 ratio (1200×600). For LinkedIn, 1200×627 is recommended. Images smaller than 600×315 may not display, and images over 8MB may be ignored.
Social platforms cache OG tag data aggressively. Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter all have debugging tools that force a cache refresh: Facebook Sharing Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug), LinkedIn Post Inspector (linkedin.com/post-inspector), and Twitter Card Validator (cards-dev.twitter.com/validator).
OG tags do not directly affect Google search rankings — Google uses its own signals for snippets. However, compelling OG tags improve click-through rates on social media, which can indirectly drive more traffic and backlinks, positively affecting SEO over time.
