What is a QR Code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that can store up to ~4,296 characters of alphanumeric data. Developed by Denso Wave in 1994, QR codes are now ubiquitous — used for website links, payment systems, contact information, WiFi credentials, and product tracking. Modern smartphones can scan QR codes natively through their camera app.

QR codes can encode URLs, plain text, email addresses (mailto:), phone numbers (tel:), SMS (smsto:), WiFi credentials (WIFI:S:ssid;T:WPA;P:password;;), contact cards (vCard), calendar events (iCal), and geographic coordinates. The most common use is URLs pointing to websites or landing pages.
QR codes have four error correction levels: L (7%), M (15%), Q (25%), H (30%). Higher levels allow the QR code to be read even when partially damaged or obscured. Use H for QR codes that will be printed on physical materials, and L for digital displays where damage is unlikely. Higher correction means slightly larger or denser codes.
A QR code can hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, 7,089 numeric-only characters, or 2,953 bytes of binary data. In practice, shorter content creates less dense QR codes that are easier to scan. For URLs, aim for under 150 characters — use a URL shortener for longer links.
