What is a QR Code?

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that can store up to ~4,296 characters of alphanumeric data. Developed by Denso Wave in 1994, QR codes are now ubiquitous — used for website links, payment systems, contact information, WiFi credentials, and product tracking. Modern smartphones can scan QR codes natively through their camera app.

A QR code can hold up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters, 7,089 numeric-only characters, or 2,953 bytes of binary data. In practice, shorter content creates less dense QR codes that are easier to scan. For URLs, aim for under 150 characters — use a URL shortener for longer links.
