What is Morse Code?

Morse code is a method of encoding text characters as sequences of dots (·) and dashes (—), developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s. Each letter, digit, and punctuation mark has a unique pattern. Morse code was the first electrical digital communications system and was used extensively in telegraphy, maritime communication, and aviation. It is still used by amateur radio operators today.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Morse code, dots and dashes within a letter have no gap (or a very short gap). Letters are separated by a short pause (traditionally represented as a space). Words are separated by a longer pause (traditionally represented as a slash / or three spaces). This tool uses / to separate words.
SOS in Morse code is ··· — — — ··· (three dots, three dashes, three dots). SOS was chosen as the universal distress signal in 1906 because it is easy to transmit and recognize, not because it stands for any specific phrase. It does not mean "Save Our Souls" — that backronym came later.
Yes, in several contexts. Amateur (ham) radio operators use it extensively — many licensing exams include Morse code. It is used in aviation for radio navigation beacon identification (VORs and NDBs still transmit their identifier in Morse). It is also used as an accessibility feature on some devices (Google Morse code keyboard for people with motor disabilities).
